The World Affairs Council of Miami is an independent and nonpartisan institution connecting our community to international affairs through diplomatic convening, public education, and professional pathways for the next generation.
Mission
An independent, nonpartisan institution for international affairs
Incorporated in Miami in 2021, in one of the most internationally connected cities in the Americas, the World Affairs Council of Miami exists to help our community understand and engage with the wider world. It takes no institutional positions, nor does it advocate for or against policies. Its work is education, dialogue, and helping to grow Miami's global profile.

We help students and citizens understand the forces shaping global affairs, through public programming, youth competition, and classroom-ready resources.
Subnational diplomacy
We convene diplomats and policymakers in direct dialogue with the Miami community—building diplomatic relationships at the local level and strengthening Miami's ties to the world.

Distinguished Speaker Series
The Mark Samuelian Distinguished Speaker Series is a leading community forum for foreign affairs and public policy at Miami Dade College. Recent speakers include the President of Lithuania, Members of Congress, and the U.S. Ambassadors to Panama and Venezuela. Free and open to the public.
Diplomatic Delegations
Tailored programs for Washington-based embassies and visiting delegations to engage Miami, focused on public diplomacy, economic collaboration and cultural exchange. Built in collaboration with Miami-based consulates, where available.
Members' Briefings
Private, off-the-record gatherings convening business, community and academic leaders with visiting dignitaries and experts. Launched in June 2026 in partnership with the City of Miami at Miami City Hall, with former United States ambassadors leading the first sessions.
Academic WorldQuest
The Council's flagship youth program, an annual international affairs competition for Miami-area high schools and pipeline for youth entry into the international affairs field. Free to every student, teacher and school. Miami teams have advanced to the national championship every year since 2022 and placed second in the nation in 2026.
International Affairs Author Talks
Authors of consequence on the books shaping how the world is understood, held with the Books & Books Literary Foundation and the University of Miami's George P. Hanley Democracy Center. Free and open to the public.
Media & Digital Literacy
Equipping Miami students and communities to navigate global information critically and recognize disinformation. Taught at Miami Dade College and delivered in the community with civic partners, drawing on field research into democratic resilience in Europe.

Roundtable with the Foreign Minister of Lithuania
A closed roundtable with Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys and Ambassador Gediminas Varvuolis on Lithuania's transition from Soviet-era dictatorship to Western democracy, and on what that experience offers Miami's Cuban and Venezuelan diaspora communities. Six months later the Council hosted Lithuania's President.

Young people are the point.
The Council's youth and student work is one programme in two parts: a competition that brings high school students into international affairs, and a path that keeps them there.
Flagship youth program
Academic WorldQuest
Academic WorldQuest is a nation-wide competition testing high school students' knowledge of international politics, geography, global economics, history, and world cultures. In Miami it is the Council's flagship youth program—free to all eligible schools and, for many students, the first time foreign affairs stops being a subject and becomes a possible career.

What comes after the competition
A command brief at U.S. Southern Command
The top three teams visit U.S. Southern Command in Doral for a Department of Defense command brief on transnational security in the Americas and interagency discussion of public-service career paths.
A foreign policy study visit to Washington
The winning team travels to the national championship in our nation's capital and visits the institutions that make and study foreign policy—meeting diplomats, officials, and experts who work on the issues that Academic WorldQuest teaches.

For schools and teachers
Entering a team costs nothing. A teacher or academic advisor registers, students prepare from the official study guide, and the competition runs in a single day. Students build the habit of following world events closely, and the preparation maps onto AP and IB coursework in world history, human geography, government, and economics. Council interns have often first encountered the Council as Academic WorldQuest competitors.
For sponsors and partners
Sponsorship keeps the competition free for every school in Miami-Dade and Broward and pays for the Washington trip that follows it. It reaches students across a wide range of public, charter, and independent schools, and it puts a sponsor's name alongside a program recognized by Miami-Dade County and hosted by Florida International University.
Miami champions
The local winning team each year represents Miami at the national championship in Washington, D.C. In 2026, the local winning team, Miami Beach Senior High, placed second in the nation.
Sponsorship sends a Miami team to the national championship and keeps the competition free for every student and school seeking to participate.

The Council's youth and student programs are built so that a student can enter at one point and keep going at no cost to student, school, or family.

An entry point, in school
High school students enter through Academic WorldQuest, free to every student, teacher and school in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Monroe County. College students enter through the Distinguished Speaker Series or the Media & Digital Literacy series—both delivered at Miami Dade College.
2Step two
A place in the room
Students may join the Council as interns. Interns are not observers. They have prepared and delivered the introduction for a visiting head of state, set up youth competitions, participated in diplomatic briefings, and staffed private programs with senior foreign policy officials.
3Step three
The Navarro-Cabrera Scholarship
Announced in October 2026 with Miami Dade College, the scholarship supports exceptional MDC students pursuing a career in international affairs—funding travel to Washington and connecting students to diplomats and local leaders in Miami.
4Step four
Washington, and what follows
Council youth programs have been hosted in Washington by the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, the Department of State, the Inter-American Development Bank, the United States Institute of Peace, and the embassies of Australia, Korea and Qatar. Former interns have gone on to study at leading universities and in pursuit of careers in the foreign service and public policy.
The Navarro-Cabrera Scholarship
Established with Miami Dade College to support exceptional MDC students pursuing a career in international affairs, public service, and diplomacy. The scholarship funds student travel to Washington, D.C. to visit key academic and foreign policy institutions, and connects students with the diplomats, policymakers, and local leaders who make Miami a global city.

Members' Briefings bring a small group together for candid discussion of the most pressing issues in global affairs. Each session is a focused briefing followed by open exchange in an intimate setting. Sessions have limited capacity, are not recorded, and are not for attribution. Brings heads of state, ambassadors, scholars, and policymakers to Miami for programs that remain free and open to the public.
